IS $1 MILLION IN SUPER ENOUGH TO RETIRE?

For many Australians, reaching $1 million in superannuation represents a significant financial milestone. But does having a seven-figure super balance necessarily mean a comfortable retirement?

Interest rates have changed significantly this year. On 29 September 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) increased the cash rate by 0.25 percentage points to 4.60%. This was the fourth 0.25 percentage-point increase during 2026, taking the cash rate from 3.60% at the beginning of the year to 4.60%. The RBA cited elevated inflation and increasing inflationary pressures among the reasons for its latest decision. The answer is not straightforward. While $1 million may sound substantial, the amount required to fund retirement can vary considerably depending on lifestyle expectations, retirement age, housing arrangements, longevity and other financial circumstances.

What does retirement actually cost?

According to the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA), its June 2026 Retirement Standard estimates that a couple aged 65–84 requires approximately $78,998 annually to maintain what ASFA defines as a comfortable retirement lifestyle. For a single person, the equivalent figure is $56,166 per year.

For a more modest retirement lifestyle, the estimated annual costs are $52,690 for couples and $36,548 for singles.

ASFA also estimates that a homeowner couple retiring at age 67 would require approximately $730,000 in superannuation savings to support a comfortable retirement, compared with $630,000 for a single homeowner.

However, these are general benchmarks based on specific assumptions, including home ownership, investment returns and access to the Age Pension. They do not represent individual retirement savings requirements.

How long might retirement last?

One of the biggest uncertainties in retirement planning is longevity.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, based on Australian Bureau of Statistics life tables for 2022–2024, a man aged 65 could expect to live another 20.1 years, while a woman of the same age could expect another 22.7 years.

This means retirement savings may need to support living expenses over two decades or longer, although individual lifespans vary considerably.

The age at which someone retires can also influence how long their savings may be required.

What other factors influence retirement affordability?

The amount held in superannuation is only one component of retirement finances.

Housing arrangements can have a significant impact. Retirees who own their homes outright may face different ongoing expenses compared with those paying rent or servicing a mortgage.

Inflation is another consideration, as the purchasing power of money can change throughout retirement. Investment performance, taxation, healthcare expenses and unexpected costs may also influence retirement outcomes.

Government support can play a role. From 20 September 2026, Services Australia lists an Age Pension assets-test cut-off of $1,121,000 for a homeowner couple, although eligibility also depends on income and other circumstances.

So, is $1 million enough?

There is no universal figure that guarantees a comfortable retirement.

For some Australians, $1 million may support their anticipated lifestyle, while for others, different spending expectations, financial commitments or retirement circumstances may produce a different outcome.

Ultimately, retirement affordability involves more than reaching a particular savings milestone. It reflects the relationship between available financial resources, future expenses and the many uncertainties that can arise throughout retirement.
