Control your own path – tips for navigating other’s interests

Money is a subject that does funny things to people – even so-called professionals.

People can sometimes have an unhealthy obsession with money – making it, getting it, keeping it and so forth.

What we have found working with clients for many years is that the truly successful people know it isn’t about the money itself.

They focus on something much more important – the valued activity that results in money.

Successful people see money as a byproduct of a well valued service or a quality product, not the be all and end all itself.

There are three important things you can do to improve your ability to have money and also to follow your own path on how to make it.

  1. Find something you can do that other people value. Find a product or service that you can deliver that people value enough for you to be able to make a profit on exchanging it.
  2. Once you know how to get value of doing one thing, or delivering a product or service, work out ways to increase your productivity or ability to deliver lots of it.
  3. Keep your promises and deliver what you said you would.

Highly successful people have worked out this formula. Value, production and delivery on promises as being the best way to improve their money situation.

Controlling your own path to successful financial outcomes is important.

It isn’t that you should do everything yourself. It is a good idea to engage other professionals to help you with production or work or advice.

However, as we inferred at the top of the article, there are people who do strange things because of money, and there are also people who have their own interests as a priority in relation to money.

We recommend you educate yourself about money and finance, so you can then choose the right people to advise you when you do choose to seek help.

But how do you work out if someone has their own interests as a priority?

Here are a few things to look out for:

  • the person may be giving advice that is related to specific investment products and they push this irrespective of your goals
  • the person may not be transparent about their product providers or their sources, or may be unwilling to explain things to you
  • they may use a lot of jargon so you can’t understand the specifics of their advice
  • they may not ask you about your personal goals or risk profile

It’s important to be educated and to choose the right people to advise you who care about your goals, and will design investment options that really suit your risk profile. People who are willing to spend the time to educate you so you can be an active decision maker and participant are the people you should work with.

Focus on producing great work, or valued products and services, and have a trusted team of advisors around you and you will be able to control your own path and win.

That’s how you control your own path.
